Frequently Asked Questions about Cosmetic and General Dentistry

Here are a few of the most commonly asked questions we receive about our practice and the dental procedures we offer. If you have a question that isn’t answered here, don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Petroselli.

I am missing one or more teeth. What are my options?

Bridges are one option, though dental implants are today’s treatment of choice for missing teeth. A free consultation with Dr. Petroselli will help you decide which option is best for you.

Dental implants are anchored into the jaw and are sized, shaped, and colored to mimic your natural teeth. They also halt bone loss, gum recession, and the shifting of your remaining teeth that can occur when you lose a tooth. Dr. Petroselli recommends that you get dental implants or a bridge as soon as possible after losing a tooth to avoid the shifting of remaining teeth. Read more about dental implants here.

I have a chipped tooth. What should I do?

Chipped teeth can diminish your self-confidence and the beauty of your smile. Both dental bonding and porcelain crowns can reshape your teeth, correcting gaps or chips. Porcelain veneers can also cover up chips, and are the best option if you desire a dramatic improvement in the shape and color of your teeth.

I am troubled by the color of my teeth. How can I whiten my smile?

A whole range of things, including tea, coffee, tobacco, and soft drinks, can diminish the whiteness of your smile. To restore the gleam of your smile, we would recommend a whitening system such as Zoom!™, or a set of porcelain veneers. Zoom!™ is a convenient, professional, in-office teeth whitening treatment, while porcelain veneers can give your smile a stunning makeover, improving the shape and alignment of your teeth while giving them a strain-resistant luminescence.

I dislike the shape of my teeth or the gaps between them. How can I make over my smile?

Porcelain veneers would be a good choice for you, since they can reshape teeth and conceal gaps. Porcelain veneers are custom-made sheets of porcelain that are bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth. They can be crafted to alter the shape of your teeth (for example, to lengthen them or erase chips) or to minimize gaps between them.

I have old silver fillings that look terrible. Can you make them look better?

Silver fillings aren’t made to last forever, and we see quite a few patients with failing or simply unsightly metal fillings.

Metal fillings also mar the appearance of your teeth and can contain mercury, an unhealthy element. Fortunately, these days, tooth-colored composite fillings are regularly used to fill decaying teeth instead of silver ones, and these composite fillings can also be used to replace your silver fillings with no risk to your filled teeth. Composite fillings are just as strong as silver ones, but are tooth-colored and contain no mercury, making them safer and more attractive to have in your mouth.

I have pain and/or clicking in my jaw. What could be the problem?

It’s possible you have TMJ disorder, which affects the temporomandibular joint (the jaw joint). Disorders of the jaw joint are characterized by pain in the jaw and surrounding areas, sometimes with limitations in jaw movement. Unfortunately, they are tricky to diagnose, because facial pain can be a result of many different conditions. When patients come to Dr. Petroselli with jaw pain, he checks for several potential causes of the pain and diagnoses the problem—which might be decayed or abscessed teeth, problems with the TMJ, or something else. With proper care, TMJ disorder can be treated. To read more about TMJ disorder, visit this page.
